The Little Book of Walks – Online Exclusive at Not Two Deer – First Release NOW AVAILABLE

Julia and I first worked together on a very limited-edition calendar for 2018. The response from my lucky holiday guests who received it was overwhelmingly positive. It was the greenlight we were both hoping for to begin masterminding our next project, the Little Book of Walks. The idea had been percolating as we worked on the calendar. Not only do we share a surname (we’re not related!), we share a passion for Exmoor.

My holiday guests regularly ask for walking routes, and Julia has an enviable library of images that bring them to life as no map can. She’s been walking Exmoor, photographing its landscape and wildlife for two decades.

It’s a cliché because it’s true, a picture really does speak a thousand words. Julia has a unique way of capturing Exmoor’s essence in her photographs. You can feel the spongy grass beneath your feet, imagine the cool mist on your skin, taste snowflakes on your tongue, and hear the gurgling of streams and waterfalls – just by looking at her work.

Some of Julia’s images lend themselves to the 12 months of the year, which is how we’ve organised this book, although of course you can walk them whenever you like. Julia, myself and Josh have walked all 12 routes so you can rely on our description and simple maps. For more detail, we recommend the excellent 1:12,500 versions sold in the Exmoor National Park Centres.

We hope these photographs will entice you to try at least one of the 12 walks we’ve suggested. And even if you enjoy them from the comfort of your armchair, that you’ll be inspired by the infinite variety and sheer jaw-dropping beauty of Exmoor.

You’ll find walks to suit all tastes and ability, from short and easy to steep and challenging. Most are dog friendly, but please be mindful of the farm and wild animals you’ll meet along the way and be ready to leash your dog. And on that point, a reminder to always close gates on your rambles.

Of course, we’ve researched the essentials like parking and loo stops. And this being Exmoor, there’s cream teas, local ales and ciders, cheese and pasties and even locally brewed spirits as a reward when you cross the finishing line!

So, choose a walk, pull on your boots, pack a mac, and let’s go.

Happy walking on Exmoor
