Looking for a useful yet active present to give at Christmas and one that will help the rural communities of Exmoor recover from the pandemic? Then the Little Book of Walks, covering 12 self-guided rambles across Exmoor for families and keen walkers of all ages, is the perfect gift.
The book covers all practical aspects of each route including a guide to the distance, parking, toilets, and where to stop for a bite to eat. The 12 walks are individual leaflets in a laminated folder which will fit inside the smallest rucksack. Perfect to take out on the traditional Boxing Day ramble with the family.
Please note that these books are fulfilled via a third party, therefore deliveries may take slightly longer than usual.
The idea for the book came from Lucy Green, the owner of Exmoor Character Cottages, who was often recommending walks and family friendly rambles to her guests. She worked on the project with her friend Julia Amies-Green, one of Exmoor’s most prolific and best-known photographers. Deciding which routes to feature was a challenge. Exmoor is an area of 268 square miles, with 34 miles of coastline and over 70% of its diverse landscape in Somerset. The two ladies came up with a winning formula of legwork to test out the terrain and a plan to illustrate each walk with Julia’s photographs. From Dunkery Beacon, the highest point on Exmoor, to the awe-inspiring Valley of Rocks, the combination of Julia’s beautiful photographs and Lucy’s well researched information, make the Little Book of Walks a useful gift for enthusiasts of the great outdoors and one that also helps support the local Exmoor economy.
During her well-trodden research, Lucy uncovered information on ancient and modern history, geography, geology and nature, and the hikes span dramatic windswept beaches, picturesque villages, and nature reserves with 330 different types of lichen. And there are seasonal walks too including the spectacle of Snowdrop Valley at Wheddon Cross in February, or a magical stroll around the twinkling village of Dunster in December. So, whether you want a short walk, or a much longer ramble with a visit to a local tearoom or pub at the end, The Little Book of Walks is your perfect companion all year round.
